About skin cancer and melanoma

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Denmark, and the number of new cases of melanoma has almost tripled over the last 30 years.

  • There are approx. 22,000 new cases of common skin cancer (in Danish) in Denmark every year
  • Around 3,000 people in Denmark develop melanoma (in Danish) every year
  • If melanoma is detected early, it can usually be treated - that is why it is a good idea to have any moles you are unsure about checked.
  • The number of new cases of both skin cancer and melanoma has risen significantly over the last 30 years.
  • Melanoma and skin cancer can be cured if detected in time.

When should you have a mole checked?

  • Changes in size or colour
  • Asymmetry or irregular edges
  • A diameter of more than 6 mm or several colours
  • A mole that forms a crust or bleeds
  • If you get a new mole that grows
  • If a family member has had melanoma
  • If you have had a lot of exposure to sun or sunbeds

When should you have your skin checked?

  • A new or changed lump on the skin
  • A glossy or shiny lump
  • A sore that will not heal
  • A sore with a glossy edge
  • A red patch that is scaly and may bleed a little

Whether you suspect a specific problem or simply want to be on the safe side, a check of your skin and moles can give you and your colleagues peace of mind and make sure any concerns are taken seriously. A check with a digital assessment by a dermatologist can clarify a skin spot or mole that has caused concern. It is a simple but important investment in your health and wellbeing.

How the skin check works

Registration by a nurse at your workplace

Digital assessment by a dermatologist

Results by phone within 1 week - usually within 48 hours

  1.  The nurse takes photos of skin and moles: The nurse registers and photographs the moles and skin changes that the employee would like assessed. The nurse does not make a diagnostic assessment or carry out screening.
  2. Digital assessment by a dermatologist: The images are sent for assessment by a specialist in dermatology (dermatologist).
  3. Results within 1 week - usually within 48 hours: After the check, each person is contacted with their results within 1 week - usually within 48 hours. If skin cancer is suspected, a report is prepared that can be used to get a referral from your own doctor to a specialist in skin diseases. The report gives the doctor all the information needed to issue a referral for further examination and any treatment, including surgical removal of the mole or spot.

Why choose our skin and mole checks at the workplace?

  1. Time-saving: A check at the workplace takes only 10 minutes per employee, compared with half a working day for a visit to a skin clinic or private hospital.
  2. Cost-effective: By using technology, we can offer skin checks for DKK 695. By comparison, private clinics charge between DKK 1,200 and DKK 2,700.
  3. Convenience: We come directly to your workplace, which minimises disruption and removes the need for employees to leave work.

By choosing our skin checks at the workplace, you save both money and time while offering your employees a practical and effective way to have any skin changes and moles that concern them checked.

Guide to checking your own moles

It is a good idea to check your moles every three months. Here is a guide to how you can do it (read more here, in Danish).

  1. Use mirrors: Use two mirrors to check your back and the backs of your legs - hold one mirror in your hand and place another on the wall. Make sure the light is good, and check your whole body thoroughly.
  2. Check all areas: Remember to inspect the skin on your head, neck and ears, but also pay attention to less exposed areas such as your scalp, inner thighs and the soles of your feet.
  3. Ask a family member or friend: Get a friend or family member to help you check the hard-to-see areas.
  4. Document your moles: Take photos of moles that look irregular. Keep the photos so you can follow any changes.

"Thank you for a really good collaboration throughout the whole process. Planning, coordination and delivery have all worked really well, and it has been a pleasure working with you." (translated from Danish)

Frequently asked questions

You should have a mole checked if it changes shape, colour or size, bleeds, itches or forms a crust, or if a new mole appears that looks different from the others. NurseCare offers mole checks with a digital dermatologist assessment, where a specialist in dermatology assesses the images and gives you results within 1 week - usually within 48 hours. Also read our guide When should a mole be checked? (in Danish)

Yes, a skin and mole check can be added and carried out together with a health check.

Each employee gets their results within 1 week - usually within 48 hours. We contact all participants by text message or phone to inform them of their results.

If the dermatologist suspects skin cancer, we prepare a detailed report that the employee can use to get a referral from their own doctor to a specialist in skin diseases. The report gives the doctor all the information needed to issue a referral for further examination and any treatment, which may include surgical removal of the mole.

Yes, with the employee's consent, we keep the images of the moles/spots for up to 30 months for future comparison at any follow-up check.

Please bring your Danish health insurance card (sundhedskort), and look over your body beforehand to choose 1-3 spots/moles you would like examined - perhaps with help from your partner or a friend.
